Gift Guide 2018 : HERE

When Katharine of Drop Forge & Tool and I first started making plans for this holiday pop up (which is being hosted collaboratively in our respective spaces) we were calling this Handmade Upstate. The funny thing is New York is a huge state but so much of our orientation has been NYC centric. I guess even for myself, it’s probably a reflection of my own path to the Hudson Valley which was preceded by over a decade living in the Big Apple before I moved up north.

Things were slow to start because I couldn’t move beyond the logo – I made so many variations, kept rolling the name around and it just never clicked. Then weeks into it, I realized – we’re not Upstate – we’re HERE!

Being in the more rural part of the Hudson Valley, our ‘local’ radius can be anything within 30 miles. Hand Made Here embraces the wide reach of people that are ‘Upstate’ makers – from Nyack to Lake George, even including our MA border friends in the Berkshires. So reflecting on the theme of ‘Here’ seemed like a good place to start in highlighting some favorites from the shop.

Origins of Memory by artist Kara Smith is a project inspired by her first spring in Hillsdale, NY. Each piece is  one-of-a-kind and she numbers each Artifact. $58-$65

some things take time, upcycled cashmere eco-print hats by Cora Hales. If you’re not familiar with eco-printing, the imprint of the actual collected plant material is what gives the color and forms on the fabric through this technique. $38
Catskill based Bright Beige is a part of Girlfriends NYC print collective rep’d in the pop up. In Hudson as a nod to town history – we put a whale on it!  8×10″ prints and limited number of framed pieces available in the pop up, 11×14″ in her Etsy shop! $18-$60
The oil infusion for this formula comes from herbs grown by Apis Apotheca in the Hudson Valley. Named for the classic Ayurvedic beverage that inspired this balm, it takes oil cleansing to a whole new level. $32
Founder Stephanie Jornov of Lou & Gee is a multigenerational Hudsonian. Ode to Henry Hudson, these are silkscreened on tees made in USA. $30
Original watercolors with pastel accents by Hudson based artist Gretchen Kelly. She somehow captures all the colors and seasons in her riverscapes. A great gift for an art appreciator, nature lover, or housewarming. $50
